News or Sensationalism? Invasion of Privacy or Need to Know?

As I watch news channels throughout the day, it amazes me how much certain news programs like to sensationalize things and act like they are not a part of the problem. One thing in particular has been bothering me this week. The death of David Carradine, and the coverage that it has been getting. I can only imagine if I was a family member and all of his personal and private things were being talked about as if they were meant to be shared and anylized by the whole world.

It is bad enough that Bangkok news plastered death photos of him all over the papers and news there, and the same news agencies that complained about that are talking nightly about him, like it is an open forum discussion. This is a man who has passed away. He deserves privacy and dignity, and so does his family.

If I died I certainly would not want every detail about my death, or private and personal thoughts and things I have done put out for the world to see. I am not famous, but really does that matter? Just because one is famous does that mean that they can not die with dignity? I know everyone says they give up their rights to live privately because they chose to become famous, but I disagree with that as well.

There are many cases that get sensationalized in the news. There are many that I think the news agencies go overboard with. Mainly when it concerns people’s private lives. Often things that could and should be left out of sensational stories are left in. People anylize these stories to the nth degree.

There are many stories that need to be told in the news like missing children and families murdered. What happened to just sticking with the facts of a story and not picking every piece of it apart in the public eye? I feel for some of these families that get all of their dirty laundry aired publicly, when it should not be about sensationalizing a story, but getting the facts out period. I have seen so many people tried in the public eye due to shows that want to keep replaying sensational videos,  photos, and recordings of high profile news stories.

I too listen to the news and watch the shows that do this even though it makes me angry at times, but I have found that I have been getting even more angry about it lately. I know that we as the public have the right to know certain things and that reporters have a duty to report, but do they really have to dealve so deep into peoples lives that we know what they had for dinner? That is my question to you.
